By 1540 all the monasteries in England had been closed. As the Protestant Reformation took hold there followed extensive changes to the services and appearance of churches. In 1548 many of the major ceremonies of the church were suppressed as superstitious; saints’ images were destroyed (idolatrous!) and altars (pagan!) replaced by communion tables. In Yorkshire many felt that these changes had been foisted on them by a southern elite. Once again fear of royal retaliation prevented any overt objection, but a large number of Yorkshire nobility as well as ordinary people secretly remained faithful to the old ways. The matter of religion was far from settled.
